A little bathroom update

When I first decided to decorate this bathroom it was completely with the kids in mind.  I wanted something happy, fun and cute.  I picked up this monkey shower curtain at Target along with some monkey shower hooks, a soap dish and a rug.  I was always looking for some additional pieces but never did find anything that made me want to open my pocketbook... until Saturday.

Before (forgive the mess, we are really people here)

I went to a yard sale and found this:

It does expand my little animal theme in the most perfect way, don'tcha think?

new shower hooks!

Not too shabby for $7!

25 Things about ME!

I thought I would share some oddball things about me to get this little blog going.  More to come later!

1. I eat pith.  Yeah, the white stuff on an orange.

2. I freak out whenever my kids try and jump on hide-a-beds. I am forever changed by a tragedy that happened a few doors from my house when I was a child. Three sisters were jumping on the bed and it folded up on two of them. Killing one and while the other was without oxygen for so long that she had to learn to walk and talk all over again. I will never forget the Hunter family.

3. After giving blood at the Senior Blood Drive in high school I wanted to get back to class so up the auditorium stairs I went and then up the flight of stairs in the science wing. Half way up I started to sway and luckily Mr. James was coming up the stairs behind me. He sat me down on the step and gave me a sucker and sat there for a few more minutes until I felt better. I still give blood, though I am not so arrogant. J

4. I always said I would never live in this city because it didn‘t seem like the right fit for our family. That was not the first time I had to eat my words. When we moved back to the area, I did my research on the school systems and learned that this area has some pretty amazing schools. That sealed the deal for me.

5. We own two Wyland paintings. The first comes with a story. We were waiting for a table at Maguire’s (our favorite restaurant in Ft. Walton Beach) and decided to pass the time in the Wyland Gallery that was next door. We were both captivated by the same picture and when the salesman told us the name we both got the chills. We had snorkeled there on our honeymoon. The other is Warm Tropical Waters, which is a beautiful picture of the Florida Keys. Never been there, but I would love to.

6. I slept in a rental car at the airport with two kids under 2. In Hawaii. I was returning home (Kwajalein) after a death in the family and during roll call (that is what they do for a military flight) I was informed that I was being bumped due to a last minute passenger with a higher rank. Incidentally, a huge military conference was happening at the same time and the only rooms available on the entire island of Oahu were $329 a night. I just couldn’t do it.

7. I don’t think I will ever get used to the tornado sirens/watches/warnings. There are only a couple works of Mother Nature that freak me out and tornados are one of them.

8. When I was growing up I swore I would never have kids. Now I cannot even fathom my life without them. Funny how life sometimes does that to you.. Changes everything you ever thought you wanted.

9. I LOVE ARTICHOKES! Steamed, not from a jar. I eat them leaf by leaf, patiently working my way to the heart. One time when I was seven, I swallowed a nickel and was unable to have artichokes for dinner that night. Oh the trauma…

10. I call my grandma every single New Year’s Eve, no matter where I am or what side of the International Date Line I am on. The year I moved from Spokane that call came from a hotel in Wyoming.

11. I never liked summer until I had to contend with it 365 days a year. I never realized how much of my mood was dependent on how it looked outside.

12. I am highly competitive, but not in an unhealthy way. My husband and I used to play rock, paper, scissors to decide who was going to change the stinky diapers.

13. The first time I bought a mango I had to google how to eat it. I was 27. (that was not a typo)

14. I would love for my yard to be registered as a butterfly sanctuary.

15. When my kids were little, we would play hide and seek in the house and when they would find me I would yell BOO! Well this little “game” has escalated into them going out of their way to frighten me. Most recently, I was in the two younger boy’s bedroom (in the dark) looking for a book to read to them and when I turned around Matthew was standing right behind me. I jumped, he laughed and said he didn’t mean to scare me. I told him to watch out…he was next. bwahahahaha

16. I carry balloons with me when we fly. They entertain the boys while we wait for our flights and I can just throw them away before we board. Besides, who can resist batting around a balloon?

17. Every time I hear the song Come on Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners I want to skip down the sidewalk in a pair of blue jean overalls. The skipping part is true, the overalls… not so much. :o)

18. I find it hard to tolerate people that cannot take responsibility for their lives and actions.

19. I am 20 years older than one of my brothers and he is 35 days older than my first son. I am just shy of 16 years older than my mother and 5 years younger than my step-mother. My husband is 9 years older than me and I am 13 years older than my eldest step son.

20. It brings me great pleasure to say to my kids, “when I was your age…” I see their eyes roll and their jaws drop like mine did when I was told those unfathomable things. Good times!

21. My favorite coffee stand is 2300 miles away. I have a hard time buying into the big coffee businesses and other than those, there is one stand that I know of in my area that is a locally owned, non franchise gourmet coffee stand. Anyone want to overnight me a granita?

22. There was a summer back in the 90’s that I craved Slurpees from 7-11. I only like certain flavors and some might have called me a Slurpee snob. I would actually call the stores near my house to ask which flavors they had so I would know which one to go to for my fix. (I officially feel like a retard)
23. Each of my kids has a different color hair, yet three have green eyes while the other is blue.

24. During Junior High and part of High School I spelled my name without the E . I thought it made me too different. Nowadays, I spell it out so nobody gets it wrong. That makes me sound so Rainman-ish. Hi, my name is Hollie. H-O-L-L-I-E I am going to miss Jeopardy, yeah… Yeah.

25. I have a gift for being a great storyteller. The most oddball bizarre things seem to happen to me, or around me. I find it very easy to laugh at myself and most times the situations. It is all about perspective and I choose to be amused.
